Personal Growth and Development!
Whether you own or manage a business, are working to positively influence the people around you, or working on your own personal growth, the use of knowledge means everything. Knowledge doesn’t get you power, it is the use of knowledge that provides the real power. I know as a business owner, manager or leader if you can create an environment of personal growth and development, you and your people will be successful. Surround yourself with people that constantly want to improve and your business and individuals will grow. As the Leader your job responsibility is to provide people with everything, they will need in order to be successful.
In order to fulfill your responsibilities as a leader you must:
Provide the leadership, knowledge, training, incentives, and consequences in order to develop, and maintain successful people.
I could write a book just on that sentence, but look at each word and think about how that applies to you and your business or life. Great leaders, for example, lead by example, are great communicators, have a vision for the future, are organized, and disciplined. Having the knowledge takes a constant effort, no one will ever know everything that there is to know. Training/teaching must be consistent and on going. I have often said that training/teaching doesn’t work, if it is an event, it has to be an ongoing process. Incentives must be given to people if you want them to feel good about themselves. Without consequences people will take liberties.
In order to instill change five things must happen. In any organization or group of people I believe that you have to make the change a policy. Train/teach your people on how to fulfill the change or policy. Give them the justification behind what you are asking them to do, the incentive or reward for doing it, and the consequence if it is not done. In other words:
In order to instill change
five things must happen!
Policy
Teaching/Training
Justification
Consequences
Incentives
If the person doesn’t fulfill the policy, have been trained on the policy, have shown that they can adhere to the policy, given the justification behind it, been informed of the reward or incentive if completed, and they know what the consequences are if expectations aren’t met. and yet they still don’t or won’t adhere then a change needs to be made.
Successful people are:
Completely trained, working toward objectives, held accountable for performance, and rewarded based on results.
As a business owner or manager, you are in the business of hiring and training people for the rest of your professional life. As a leader of people, the exact same thing is true, you are in the business of helping people reach their potential. I don’t think people will ever be completely trained, simply because the world and business are changing at a very rapid pace. A leader, business owner or manager has to work toward objectives, which are goals and objectives, the people have to be held accountable to producing at least a minimum level of performance and rewarded based on reaching or exceeding the expectations.
It is only through the consistent application of solid principles that a person and/or a business will grow and reach maximum potential. Again, the six primary principles of personal improvement are below. They are solid principles when it comes to people. Great leaders, owners, and coaches, have to be where the action is, with their people. You cannot effectively implement any one of these principles from a distance. You have to be available, listening, catching people doing things both right and wrong, offering positive praise and solid coaching when appropriate and needed. When it comes to Non-negotiable standards these are things that will leave a lasting impression on you, your business and the people you are leading.
Six Primary Principles for Success:
- Training & Coaching
- Non-Negotiable Standards
- Goals
- Accountability
- A Learning/Training Process
- Having a Mentor
These are the six basic areas where people need to be knowledgeable, focused, and thus need training in order to perform their responsibilities. These things are the leader’s responsibility to provide. Imagine an automobile with four tires. Should one of the tires be low on air or flat the automobile would not run efficiently. The same is true of people if one of these six areas is lacking then people will not reach their maximum potential.
