You Can’t Fake It!

We’re all guilty. Every one of us has done it. If you’re honest, you can’t deny it.

I’m not proud of it, and I wouldn’t recommend it—but I’ve been caught more times than I’d like to admit. In fact, just today. I’ve done it with my wife, my kids, my co-workers, my friends… even my parents.

What is it?

Faking it.

Not that kind—I’m talking about faking attention.

You know exactly what I mean. Someone is talking to you, and you’re nodding, maybe even throwing in a “yeah” or “I get it,” but the truth is… you’re not really there. Your mind is somewhere else. Thinking about the next customer, the next task, the next problem.

Then it happens.

A fifteen-minute conversation ends, and you have no idea what was just said.
Your spouse asks for your opinion—and you’ve got nothing.
A co-worker asks a question—and you can’t answer it.

Worse yet, at the end of the conversation, you’re asked something directly… and now you’re stuck. You didn’t hear the question, but instead of admitting it—you fake it.

And that’s where the real damage begins.

Over time, I’ve learned this: when you fake it, you lose—almost every time.

You answer the wrong question.
You respond to the wrong issue.
Or you’re forced to admit you weren’t listening at all.

And now, instead of being seen as helpful or professional, you come across as distracted, disinterested, or even disrespectful.

In your personal life, people may forgive you.

In business? Your customers won’t.

A customer who doesn’t feel heard doesn’t argue… they leave.
They walk out empty-handed—and often don’t come back.

In retail—whether you’re selling jewelry, furniture, appliances, or working in a pawn environment—your ability to truly listen is one of your greatest competitive advantages. Products can be matched. Prices can be beat. But a customer who feels understood? That’s hard to replace.

The cost of not paying attention is steep.

Missed opportunities.
Lost trust.
Lost sales.

The good news? This is a habit you can fix.

Start by being fully present in every conversation—at home, at work, everywhere. When you practice real listening with your family, your friends, and your co-workers, it becomes second nature when it matters most—with your customers.

Look them in the eye.
Hear their words.
Understand their needs.

Because in sales—and in life—you can’t fake it.

The result? Stronger relationships… and MORE SALES.
