Make It Fun
During any busy season—holidays or otherwise—sales organizations experience high pressure and high stress. These are the times when the results of the entire year are often determined. Whether it has been a great, good, average, or poor year may very well hinge on how you perform during your busiest periods.
Customer nerves are frayed. Salespeople are working long, demanding hours. The pace is relentless, and expectations are high. Yet in the middle of all this pressure, everything still comes down to your skills, your attitude, your enthusiasm—and your ability to connect. No matter how busy or stressful it becomes, one rule must remain constant: HAVE FUN.
The difference between success and failure is often determined by whether you are enjoying the season or simply trying to survive it. Customers want to shop in places that feel fun, welcoming, and energetic. They want to enjoy spending their money, especially when buying gifts. And you and your coworkers deserve to enjoy your work as well. Stores where people are clearly having fun create better experiences, stronger connections, and ultimately, better results.
Many of you have seen the famous video of the Seattle Fish Market, where employees throw fish through the air and engage customers with enthusiasm and humor. I’ve also seen fudge shops where employees sing, dance, and playfully toss fudge across marble tables. These places don’t just look like fun—they are wildly successful. The fish market sells a lot of fish. The fudge shop sells a lot of fudge.
That’s no accident.
The ability to make work fun is one of the key traits that separates great organizations from average ones. Humor builds positive relationships. Laughter breaks down barriers. A genuine smile is often the best way to begin any interaction. When customers feel comfortable and relaxed, trust forms—and trust leads to sales.
Having fun in your career is what makes the long hours worthwhile. Sometimes, the only thing preventing work from being enjoyable is your own mindset. You decide whether you are going to have a great day or a miserable one. That choice belongs to you.
So enjoy the season. Make it fun. Smile often. Laugh freely. Life is far too short to approach it any other way.
HAVE FUN!
