Share the Enthusiasm
Our customers walk through our doors excited. Many have saved for days, weeks, months—sometimes even years—to finally buy something meaningful. They arrive filled with emotion, anticipation, and desire. Whether they’re purchasing a new computer, sofa, engagement ring, hot tub, sporting equipment, or a long-awaited vacation, they’re often celebrating a milestone. They’re bubbling over with excitement.
That is, until they run into the stereotypical salesperson.
You know the one—walking the sales floor with a look that says they’d rather be anywhere else. They’ve lost their spark for the profession and the products they’re supposed to champion.
Why does that happen?
There are plenty of reasons enthusiasm can fade: poor training, weak supervision, lack of incentives, unclear goals, or even personal challenges. Those obstacles are real. But one thing is equally true:
Every salesperson controls the enthusiasm they bring to each customer interaction.
Enthusiasm is a choice—and it’s a key element of retail success. No outside factor should be allowed to dim the excitement you bring to your presentation. When you lose enthusiasm, you lose influence, momentum, and ultimately, sales.
Enthusiasm is Contagious
Great retail salespeople tap into the customer’s anticipation and match it with their own excitement. They understand that enthusiasm doesn’t just improve the customer’s experience—it creates the experience.
Consider these moments:
- Jewelry: When a customer comes in for an engagement ring, are you sharing the magic of their story? Are you asking about the proposal, the wedding, the honeymoon? Are you celebrating with them?
- Furniture: When someone is remodeling, do you get excited about their vision? Are you helping them imagine how the new room will look and feel?
- Sporting Goods: When a customer talks about their sport, do you come alive with them? Do you connect with the passion and energy behind the activity?
Customers want to feel understood, supported, and celebrated—not processed.
When you share in their excitement, the entire experience becomes memorable, enjoyable, and far more likely to end in a sale.
The Bottom Line
Enthusiasm costs nothing, but it pays you back every single day.
Match your customers’ excitement. Join in their journey. Celebrate their purchase alongside them.
