You Weren’t Born With A Fair Certificate!

Sometimes it feels like life just isn’t fair.

You don’t get the breaks others seem to get.
You’re not as successful as you think you should be.
You haven’t accomplished everything you set out to achieve in your business.

Meanwhile, others appear to have it easier. They learn faster, apply concepts quicker, and somehow seem to be in the right place at the right time. The “lucky branch” seems to hit everyone but you.

People you grew up with seem to have more—more possessions, more vacations, fewer hours, and more opportunities handed to them. And you can’t help but wonder… why not me?

You work hard—maybe harder than most.
You put in the hours—often more than anyone else.
Yet success doesn’t seem to come easy.

For you, it feels like everything requires more effort—more time, more study, more persistence.

My mother-in-law used to say, “You weren’t born with a fair certificate.”

Another way I’ve heard it said: “Fair is a place where they give ribbons to pigs.”

In other words—fair doesn’t exist in business.

No matter what you do, how well you do it, or how much recognition you receive, there will always be moments when things don’t feel fair.

A customer chooses someone else.
A coworker gets the sale you thought you earned.
A competitor undercuts your price.

That’s not unfair—that’s reality.

And the sooner you accept that, the sooner you take control.

Because success in retail—whether you’re selling jewelry, furniture, or working in a pawn environment—isn’t about waiting for fairness. It’s about creating opportunity.

You have to make your own breaks.

You may need to:

  • Work harder
  • Stay later
  • Ask better questions
  • Listen more carefully
  • Study your product and your customer at a deeper level

Most importantly, you must recognize opportunity when it shows up—and act on it.

In retail sales, every customer interaction is a chance:

  • A chance to build trust
  • A chance to stand out
  • A chance to close
  • A chance to grow your reputation

The top performers aren’t the ones who had it easy—they’re the ones who refused to use “unfair” as an excuse.

They turned effort into skill.
They turned skill into confidence.
They turned confidence into results.

And you can do the same.

You are not at the mercy of luck.
You are not waiting for someone to hand you success.

You are in control.

So stop measuring your journey against someone else’s highlight reel. Stop waiting for things to be “fair.”

Instead—focus on what you can control.

Your attitude.
Your preparation.
Your effort.
Your response to opportunity.

Because when you do…

Those “lucky breaks” you’ve been waiting for?
You’ll start creating them yourself..
