Challenge Yourself!

As many of you know, I began my sales career in retail, selling shoes. Looking back, I didn’t realize how fortunate I was to have an exceptional sales manager early in my career. He was the kind of leader who constantly challenged me to improve, raise my standards, and never become comfortable with simply being “good enough.”

After I had been with the company for several years, he asked me a question that has stayed with me throughout my entire career:

“Do you have five years of retail experience, or do you have one year of experience repeated five times?”

That question stopped me in my tracks.

When I honestly evaluated myself, I realized I probably had two years of real growth followed by several years of doing the same things over and over. I knew my products, I understood the store, and I had developed routines that worked—but I wasn’t intentionally growing anymore.

It’s easy to fall into that trap in retail. Once we learn the merchandise, understand store operations, and become comfortable serving customers, we can begin relying on habit instead of continually improving. Product knowledge is important, but it’s only the beginning. The real opportunity for growth comes from learning how to better connect with people, ask better questions, uncover customer needs, build trust, overcome objections, and create memorable shopping experiences.

Retail is constantly evolving. Customer expectations change. New products arrive. Technology advances. Selling techniques improve. The associates who continue learning are the ones who consistently stand out.

Ask yourself these questions on a regular basis:

  • Am I creating the best possible experience for every customer?
  • Am I asking enough questions to truly understand my customers’ needs?
  • What new product knowledge or selling skills can I learn today?
  • What can I learn from my top-performing teammates?
  • Is there a better way to serve my customers and grow my sales?

The best retailers never stop learning. Every customer interaction is an opportunity to improve. Every challenge is a lesson. Every successful sale teaches you something that can help with the next one.

I’ve never faulted someone for not knowing everything. None of us starts our retail careers with all the answers. What matters is the willingness to learn, ask questions, seek coaching, and remain curious. You can’t be blamed for what you haven’t learned yet—but you are responsible for making the effort to learn.

Knowledge is what separates an average sales associate from a trusted sales professional. The associates who consistently invest in learning their products, improving their selling skills, and delivering exceptional customer experiences don’t just sell more—they build loyal customers, earn greater opportunities, and develop careers instead of simply working jobs.

So, challenge yourself.

Don’t settle for repeating the same year of experience over and over. Make every year count by learning something new, improving your skills, and finding better ways to serve your customers.

In retail, the goal isn’t simply to make another sale—it’s to become a little better with every customer you help. That’s how great retail careers are built.
