We Have Two Choices
Life—and especially a career in sales—is filled with choices. Some decisions are major turning points, while others seem small and insignificant. Yet it is often the small choices we make every day that determine whether we achieve average results or exceptional success.
Most of the time, the right choice is obvious. Unfortunately, convenience, habit, fear, or complacency can tempt us to choose the easier path instead of the better one. Every choice carries a consequence, and over time those consequences shape our careers, our relationships, and ultimately our lives.
Every day we choose to either:
- Be in a good mood or allow negativity to control our attitude.
- Learn something new every day or convince ourselves we already know enough.
- Turn over a sale you aren’t going to make or let your ego cost your company—and yourself—a customer.
- Be enthusiastic or simply go through the motions.
- Ask for the sale or leave the decision to chance.
- Attempt to Add-On or settle for less than you and your customer could have enjoyed.
- Be honest or sacrifice your integrity for a short-term gain.
- Build a relationship with every customer or treat each interaction as a one-time transaction.
- Arrive at work on time or start the day behind before it even begins.
- Give every opportunity your very best effort or accept mediocrity.
- Lead by example or expect others to do what you are unwilling to do.
- Be a team player or focus only on yourself.
- Respect yourself and others or create unnecessary conflict.
- Accept responsibility or make excuses.
- Prepare for success or hope success somehow finds you.
- Focus on solutions or dwell on problems.
- Improve each day or remain exactly where you are.
The interesting thing about these choices is that no one can make them for us. Managers can coach us. Companies can provide training. Friends and family can encourage us. But when the moment arrives, the decision belongs to us alone.
In retail sales, these choices become visible every day. One salesperson greets every customer with energy while another waits to see if someone walks over. One asks thoughtful questions while another gives a price and hopes for the best. One follows up after the sale while another never contacts the customer again. The difference between average performers and top performers is rarely talent alone. More often, it is the accumulation of better choices made consistently over time.
Before you speak or act, pause for just a moment. Consider your options. Evaluate the situation, think about the consequences, and choose the response that moves you closer to the professional—and the person—you want to become.
